Soccer Coaching Staff

The Hokie Soccer Academy is committed to providing quality soccer coaching for all campers. Each summer, we choose our coaches and staff from professional, college, club, and high school soccer programs around the country.

OLIVER WEISS
Academy Director & Virginia Tech’s Head Men’s Soccer Coach

Oliver Weiss

Regarded as one the finest coaches in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Oliver Weiss became the head soccer coach at Virginia Tech in 2002. He founded the Hokie Soccer Academy the same year so that he could continue his impact on youth soccer players. Weiss's coaching experience includes achievements at both the college and youth soccer levels.

Coach Weiss’ record in six seasons with the Hokies (2002-2007):

  • 68-39-16 record (W-L-T)
  • Four NCAA Tournament berths (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007)
  • Three All-Americans (2003, 2005, 2007)
  • Three ACC Sportsmanship Awards, 2004, 2006, 2007)
  • Three Coach of the Year Awards, 2003, 2005, 2007
  • Only VT coach to go to the Final Four (College Cup, 2007) and to beat a #1 and #2 ranked team in the same season (2004)

As an assistant coach in college (1995-2001):

  • University of North Carolina, NCAA & ACC Champions, 1999-2001
  • College of William & Mary, CAA Champions, 1996-1998
  • University of New Hampshire, 1995

As a youth soccer coach (1988-2001):

  • VYSA Coach of the Year, 1990 & 1995
  • 8 consecutive State Cup titles, 1988-1995
  • Region 1 Championship and National Championship Semifinalist (U17)
  • Coached in these clubs: High Point Stars (NC), Richmond Strikers (VA), Richmond Capitals (VA), Seacoast United (NH), Williamsburg Soccer Club (VA), CASL (NC)

Oliver Weiss has coached at virtually every age group and at every level of soccer with a consistent level of success. The curriculum for the Hokie Soccer Academy is based on his years of experience with youth soccer teams and is tailored to the specific needs and physical development of each player.

MIKE BRIZENDINE
Assistant Academy Director

Mike BrizendineMike Brizendine is the Assistant Director of the Hokie Soccer Academy since 2004. He is also the top Assistant Soccer Coach at Virginia Tech. Mike is a 1999 graduate of James Madison University. As a player at JMU, Mike played on two teams that went to the NCAA Elite Eight Tournament. His coaching background includes stints at Ferrum College and Bridgewater College where he was the assistant and head coach respectively. He led the team to back-to-back winning seasons and set a school record for most wins. Mike has an excellent reputation for teaching game tactics and the subtleties of gamesmanship to youth soccer players who aspire to play in college and beyond.

CHASE HARRISON
Assistant Academy Director

Chase harrisonChase Harrison has rejoined our Academy Staff for the 2008 summer sessions. Chase was a standout goalkeeper for the Hokies from 2002-2005. He broke every goalkeeping record at VT and led his teams to two NCAA tournaments. Chase will be overseeing the Goalkeeper Academies. However, due to his professional contract with the Rochester Rhinos of the USL Division 1, he cannot be at every session this summer. Coach Harrison’s training plans will still be used for all Goalkeeping Academies.

Academy Counselors

The Academy employs well-rounded individuals who have extensive playing background to serve as assistant coaches and counselors during each session. Virginia Tech soccer players make up the majority of assistant coaches and counselors.

Academy Trainers and Medical Supervision

The Hokie Soccer Academy employs nationally licensed trainers and medical doctors to supervise and monitor all campers at the Academy and day camps. A trainer will be present at all of the field sessions and in the residence halls day and night. We have medical policies in place to provide immediate care for all of our participants.

A special arrangement with Gatorade allows the Hokie Soccer Academy to supply every camper with Gatorade enhanced drinks and water during all sessions.
